22/11/07 UNPRECEDENTED 100 PER CENT IN FAVOUR OF OXFORD UNION DEBATE GOING AHEAD
The new direct democracy website (www.1party4all.co.uk) has found that an unprecedented 100 per cent of those voting are in favour of allowing David Irving and Nick Griffin to participate in a debate on free speech at the Oxford Union next Monday (November 26).

The Oxford Union invited Nick Griffin (BNP chairman) and David Irving (the historian who was imprisoned in Austria for challenging the extent of the Holocaust and denying the existence of gas chambers at Auschwitz) to participate in a debate on free speech. The invitations prompted a backlash from a number of groups, including Unite Against Fascism (UAF), which organised a protest against the event earlier this week.

There have been calls of ‘irresponsibility’ against the Oxford Union for endangering students’ safety, which will be meeting tomorrow (Friday, November 22) to decide whether the debate will go ahead.

Comments from members on the 1Party4All website include:

“There can be no constraint on the subjects of free speech.”

“I may detest what you say, But will die for your right to say it!!! enough said!”

“This country has free speech as one of its foundations, so there is no way that the Union could possibly bow to any demonstration calling for either to be barred.”

“This country has always protected the right to free speech. There is no reason at all why they should not be allowed to participate, irrespective of who they represent or what they stand for.”

“It should go ahead on principle alone!!”

“How else can those holding their views be subjected to the same public scrutiny without their full exposure in open debate? To deny them freedom of speech is to allow their image to become gilded with a false air of romanticism, which may prove more attractive to the disenchanted elements of society.”

The poll continues.
